Quran Burning Update: United States, France, and Germany Call on Nationals in Turkey to be 'Vigilant' and Keep a 'Low Profile'

Paris fears reprisals after Danish-Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan burned copies of the Qur’an in Sweden and Denmark during anti-sharia protests (see here, here, here).

France and the United States called on their nationals in Turkey on Friday evening to show “vigilance” in the face of the risk of attacks in retaliation for the copies of the Qur’an burning in Sweden and Denmark during demonstrations.

“In light of the recent incidents of burning Qurans in Europe, the US Government is warning its citizens of possible terrorist attacks targeting places of worship as a retaliatory measure in Turkey,” said the US Embassy in Ankara. “Terrorists could attack without warning and target places of worship frequented by Westerners,” she said.

The American representation recommends remaining “vigilant, to avoid crowds and to keep a low profile.”

“Exercise maximum vigilance”

Simultaneously, the French representation in Ankara sent a similar message by email to its nationals in the country, referring to the alert from the United States.

“As the risk of a terrorist attack in Turkey remains high, as recalled by the security alert issued by the United States Embassy on January 27, 2023, French people residing or passing through Turkey are called upon to show maximum vigilance, especially in gathering places likely to be frequented by foreign nationals, including places of worship,” she said.

This press release was to be put online in the evening on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, and that of the French Embassy in Ankara, said a diplomat.

Diplomatic crisis between Ankara and Stockholm

Several demonstrations took place last week in Stockholm and on Friday in Copenhagen, during which copies of the Qu’ran were burned by Paludan, who was protesting against Turkey’s demands that Sweden and other Western countries impose Sharia blasphemy laws on their population. The Islamic government has vetoed the entrance of Sweden into NATO.

Ankara has been blocking since May the enlargement of the Atlantic Alliance to this country, as well as to Finland, demanding from Stockholm the extradition of Kurdish refugees whom it considers to be “terrorists.”

These incidents have been denounced and condemned by the governments concerned and Western capitals, notably Washington.

But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned that Sweden can no longer count on Turkey’s “support” to join NATO, and negotiations are officially suspended.

Germany

The German Embassy in Turkiye, following the diplomatic missions of the US and France, has warned its citizens in the country about possible terror attacks on Turkish territory after a series of actions in Europe to desecrate the Koran, Report informs referring to TASS.

“According to representatives of the special services, the threat of terror attacks is growing in Turkiye, following the incident with the burning of the Koran at its embassy in Sweden,” the embassy tweeted. In this regard, German citizens staying in Turkiye are advised to exercise maximum attention and vigilance when visiting public places to avoid crowds of people and areas where worship services are performed.
