The Disingenuous Use of a Meme

Socialists do not want to “improve” society. They want to tear down society.

In response to the obvious hypocrisy of American socialists, that is, benefiting fully from the fruits of free enterprise while actively trying to tear it down, many on the left will present the meme highlighted in as the featured image.

The meme, designed by Portland, Oregon-based cartoonist Matt Bors, is set somewhere in the middle ages. It shows a man carrying a bundle on his back pondering how to improve his lot in life. He is rudely interrupted by another man who mocks him for “participat[ing] in society” even as he wants to improve it.

The concept is disingenuous if used by socialists because unlike the man carrying the bundle, socialists do not want to “improve” society. They want to tear down society.

The image is a portion of a larger comic, but with the same theme (Titled “Mr. Gotcha”):

If socialists wanted to build upon current institutions to make things better, the illustration would be applicable. But as anyone who has witnessed Antifa in action knows, socialists are not interested in working within the system, they want to destroy the system.

The criticism that young American socialists are disingenuously avoiding with this meme is valid. Socialists bash “capitalism” (which should be referred to as free enterprise) while sipping a Starbucks latte Tweeting from their iPhones having lived their entire lives fed, housed, clothed, educated, and otherwise pampered.
