Poland has firmly opposed the latest European Union (EU) proposal regarding the mandatory redistribution of migrants among member states. The proposal, put forth by EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, suggests that countries refusing to participate in redistribution should face fines of 22,000 euros per migrant they decline to accept. Polish diplomatic sources have stated that their government will not accept any solution involving mandatory migrant redistribution.
The issue of centralized migrant reception, which would transfer power over migration policy to Brussels, has been a contentious topic since the 2015 migrant crisis. While previous attempts to establish a supranational migration policy have failed, the latest migration pact proposal may pave the way for such a policy. In the case of countries rejecting migrant redistribution, the proposed solution would impose significant fines for each migrant refused.
According to Polish diplomatic sources, the European Commission’s proposal would effectively work as a penalty, with countries expected to pay 22,000 euros per migrant they would have otherwise received. Poland has raised concerns about the proposed fines, citing the EU’s significantly lower compensation for hosting Ukrainian refugees. The country already hosts approximately 1 million refugees from Ukraine under international protection, and the EU has allocated 200 million euros to support them, equating to just 200 euros per Ukrainian refugee. Poland argues that it is unfair and economically unjustified for the EU to demand 22,000 euros per migrant when the compensation for Ukrainian refugees is significantly lower.
The impending handover of the EU presidency to Spain, currently governed by a left-wing administration, represents a pivotal opportunity for pro-migration and globalist forces within the EU to vigorously advance their agendas. Detractors of the migration pact vehemently contend that it flagrantly dismisses the fundamental tenets of member states’ sovereignty and their unalienable right to determine their own migration policies. Moreover, they stress that the intricate nature of migration renders it a multifaceted challenge, with each country confronting unique pressures and distinct circumstances.
By imposing centralized migrant quotas, the EU risks inflaming tensions and deepening the existing rifts that already pose a significant threat to its unity. Moreover, such a heavy-handed approach will worsen divisions, pushing the EU further away from the cooperative intergovernmental framework it purports to uphold and steering it towards an overtly supranational federalist structure. The consequences of this decision would be far-reaching, shaking the very foundations of trust and cooperation among member states and potentially ushering in an era of heightened discord within the union.
The Polish Government would be much better off working with the Russians instead of against them.
