While the rise of antisemitism and the defense of terrorist groups dominates headlines in the wake of the Israel-Hamas/Palestine conflict, a notable silence surrounds the ongoing construction of Salafist-influenced mosques in Sweden. The “Vi Mår Bra” (We Are Doing Well) mosque project, launched earlier this year, aims to build a new mosque in Sweden every month, with a long-term goal of having at least one mosque in every Swedish city.
Despite raising over 100 million SEK and securing funding for 12 construction projects, the media and politicians have largely remained silent on the potential implications of this project for Sweden’s development. The campaign’s initial motto, “For every Quran burned, we build a new mosque,” has shifted to leveraging the Israel-Hamas conflict to justify fundraising.
Journalist Sofie Löwenmark, known for investigating Islam, highlights the concerning lack of public debate around the Vi Mår Bra project. The silence becomes more ominous when examining the backgrounds of some mosque leaders involved in the campaign. One such example is Abdelhak Lahouaichiri, chairman of a congregation in Ljungby, whose past antisemitic statements and online activities supporting terrorist groups raise questions about the values propagated within these mosques.
The Vi Mår Bra project is not just about constructing mosques; it symbolizes a broader shift. The individuals leading this extensive mosque-building initiative largely identify as Salafists—a group known for its ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam. Salafists see themselves as defenders of an original, unadulterated Islam. They model their religious practice and lifestyle exclusively on the principles of the Qur’an, the Prophet Mohammed, and the first three Muslim generations, the so-called righteous ancestors (Al-Salaf al-Salih in Arabic). As a consequence, Salafists want to establish a ‘theocracy’ according to their interpretation of the rules of sharia, one in which the liberal democratic order no longer applies.
As the project nears its goal of a mosque in every city, the risk of democracy-hostile forces gaining prominence and influence becomes more palpable.
The critical question for Swedish society revolves around the leadership and funding of these mosques. What do Swedes think will be taught in Quranic schools, led by strict adherents to Islam who believe non-Muslims are inferior and advocate for the application of Islamic law? How do they anticipate mosque leaders viewing women, considering Islam’s perspective on women as worth less than men, with men being in charge of women, as stated by the words of Muhammad and the Quran?
Why are Sweden’s leaders ignoring the radical messages expected to be preached within these premises? Fundamentally, there is a need for Swedes and authorities to understand and acknowledge the fact that the influential figures in these mosques perceive Swedish and Western society as enemies who should be conquered.
Furthermore, it is imperative to investigate the sources of financial backing for these mosques. Are the funds emanating from Islamic governments seeking to expand their influence in Sweden and contribute to the further radicalization of their diaspora? Understanding the origins of the financial support behind the “Vi Mår Bra” mosque project is crucial for unveiling potential geopolitical motivations and ensuring transparency in the face of a project that poses significant implications for Swedish society.
In a time marked by deep conflicts with religion as a driving force, the Swedish public must grapple with the implications of allowing a Salafist-led project of this scale to unfold unchecked. The silence surrounding the growth of these mosques is a dangerous oversight that will have far-reaching consequences for the secular and egalitarian values that define Western democracies.
