A man in his sixties wearing a yarmulke was the victim of a targeted anti-Jewish attack in the 20th arrondissement of Paris as he was leaving a synagogue late Friday afternoon. The attacker is currently at large. The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, referred to the incident as “an unspeakable act” on the social network X.

The attack occurred around 5:30 p.m. on rue des Orteaux, near Porte de Montreuil, according to the victim’s account. He was violently punched and kicked by his assailant, who then fled on foot. As of Saturday, the attacker remains unidentified. A witness to the scene reportedly confided that they heard the attacker insult the victim as a “dirty Jew.“

The sixty-year-old victim received medical attention from firefighters before being transported to Croix-Saint-Simon Hospital. He suffered a broken nose, among other injuries. The investigation has been handed over to the 20th arrondissement police station.
Gérald Darmanin has requested, via telegram sent to the prefects, increased security measures for the Jewish community “given the high level of terrorist threat still present in our country and the escalated tensions in the Middle East in recent days.”
