A controversial Muslim cleric operating in the UK, spreading Islam in a bluntly Koranic manner, has raised millions to purchase a small British island to create his own Islamic state, according to the Daily Mail.
Forty-five-year-old Sheikh Yasser al-Habib is reported to already have military-style training camps and intends to establish his own infrastructure and services on the island, such as mosques, schools, and hospitals.
Kuwait expelled this Islamic leader, but he found asylum in the UK. The following video shows images of his militaristic practices, which were known before he found sanctuary in the United Kingdom.
Al-Habib, who is accused of inciting sectarian strife between Shias and their Sunni rivals both in Britain and across the Arab world, operates from his “global headquarters” located in the scenic village of Fulmer in South Buckinghamshire, UK.
Now, Al-Habib is calling on his followers to donate toward a £3.5 million target to buy the low-lying 270-acre island of Torsa, around 20 miles off the coast of Oban and currently on the market for £1.5 million. Uninhabited at present, Torsa is mostly covered by pasture and is only accessible by private boat, while its only building is a three-bedroom farmhouse currently used as a holiday let. Al-Habib wants to build a hospital, military training center, and religious school there, creating a “homeland” for Islamists from all over the world.
Previously, Al-Habib had his eyes on an unnamed North American island “located on the border between the United States and Canada.” The island sold for $8 million, and a Canadian charity had the winning bid, he told his followers, the Mail reported. He claimed Canada would make an ideal base due to the country’s “generally welcoming” stance and lax immigration laws. The exact location of this island was not made clear.
Articles and videos raise the question: If someone labeled a “right-wing violent extremist” wanted to purchase the island for their purposes, there would be major interventions by both the media and the government.
