The radical left Extinction Rebellion seeks to tear down “capitalism” using man-made global warming as their vehicle. Just as the socialist-driven Green New Deal proposes to eventually get rid of airplanes and beef, Extinction Rebellion wants to get rid of cars, planes, beef and even wants to take away your ability to heat your house.

If one takes the time to study the proposals made by the hard left Extinction Rebellion, one will find that they are certainly ridiculous and contradictory but perfectly in line with the low-info socialist vision of a massive “redistribution of wealth.”

Consider a 2015 statement made by Gail Bradbrook at the 2015 Compassionate Revolution launch: [Precursor to Extinction Rebellion]

“…we need a rapid redistribution of wealth and power to tackle the urgent issues of our age.”

Child activist Greta Thunberg summed it up when she addressed an Extinction Rebellion event in November 2018:

“…rich countries need to get down to zero emissions [of so-called greenhouse gases], within 6–12 years, so that people in poorer countries can heighten their standard of living by building some of the infrastructures that we have already built.”

In her recent speech to the United Nations, Thunberg directly targeted “capitalism:”

“What a disgrace that it takes a 16-year-old to tell world leaders what they won’t acknowledge: We cannot continue with this type of ruthless capitalism that is destroying our planet. This is why we need young people leading our climate justice movement,”

‘Zero Emissions’ versus ‘Net Zero Emissions’

Thunberg’s use of the phrase “zero emissions” should be clarified. There is an important distinction with the concept of “zero emissions” versus “net zero emissions.”

“Zero emissions” means that citizens would have to completely avoid leaving any so-called carbon footprint. “Net zero emissions” would mean that humans could have a little bit more leeway – they could take public transportation and wear factory made clothing, perhaps, but the emissions would have to be “offset” in some way, say, like planting a tree, reminiscent of Al Gore’s “Carbon Credits.”

To understand what “net zero” means, consider this from the BBC:

“Researchers at Zero Carbon Britain suggested that if the UK wanted to get to net zero by 2030, Britain would need to get about 130 gigawatts of electricity from wind, meaning around 13,000 extra wind turbines off shore. This would take up an area twice the size of Wales. The UK would also need about 7 gigwatts of onshore wind, meaning another 3,500 turbines.

“There would also have to be significant dietary changes, with people cutting back on meat and dairy.

“Flying would have to be restricted. Severely.

“Achieving net zero five years earlier than the Zero Carbon Britain plan [by 2025] would be an unprecedented challenge, akin to a wartime situation. It would not be impossible but it would depend on a fierce political commitment.

“We tend to forget what can be achieved in really compressed periods of time when the whole of industry and the whole of government put their minds to it.

Democratic Socialists of America member and Congresswoman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez scrubbed the FAQs from her website that explained in February that the so-called the Green New Deal strategically set a goal to “net-zero” [emissions] as opposed to a full “zero emissions” because “…we aren’t sure that we’ll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast…”

Consider the words of PhD Assistant Professor of Political Science Thea Riofrancos, who addressed America’s largest Marxist organization: Democratic Socialists of America at their biennial convention in August:

We need to cut global carbon emissions in at least by half by 2030 to stave off a climate crisis that threatens the very basis of human society … Addressing these calamities is an enormous task.

Ultimately, we need to confront their root cause: Capitalism… To start with, we should demand massive public investment in renewable energy, social housing, mass transit and ecosystem restoration.

We are of course the largest U.S. socialist organization in almost a hundred years. We have political allies… Insurgent and inspiring elected officials like comrade khalid [kamau] at all levels of public office in this country. Indeed, in just a few years we have transformed the horizons of political possibility.

We must use this power and increase it by steadfastly confronting the most pressing crisis of our century. The Green New Deal – advocated for by our allied politicians in Congress – addresses the severity of the crisis and it recognizes the deep links between rampant inequality and climate change… A radical Green New Deal is a stepping stone to building democratic socialism in our lifetimes…

This is a world historic opportunity to build the political power we need to put our society on the path to climate safety and democratic socialism. We must seize it.

The socialists pushing these outrageous proposals care much less about the environment than about controlling you.
