After a significant and dangerous delay, the Biden administration has now extended Secret Service protection to presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., following the recent attempt on President Trump’s life. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the decision on Monday, stating, “In light of this weekend’s events, the president has directed me to work with the Secret Service to provide protection to Robert Kennedy Jr.”
Calls have been mounting for Kennedy to be provided Secret Service protection following the assassination attempt at former President Trump’s rally on Saturday. Trump joined these calls on Monday, writing on Truth Social that he believes “it is imperative” that Kennedy gets protection “immediately.” He added, “Given the history of the Kennedy family, this is the obvious right thing to do!”
Kennedy responded to Trump’s comments: “It is a hopeful sign for our country when a political opponent calls for one’s protection. Maybe our country can unite after all.”
The hesitation to provide RFK Jr. with Secret Service detail has been met with confusion and concern, especially considering his family’s tragic history with political violence. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s uncle, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in November 1963 in Texas by Lee Harvey Oswald, according to official records. Additionally, his father, Robert Kennedy, who served as Attorney General, was assassinated by Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian anti-Zionist, on June 5, 1968.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has long sought the privilege of Secret Service protection. He stated last year that his official request for such protection was denied. The Secret Service is authorized to protect major presidential and vice presidential candidates and their spouses within 120 days of a general presidential election. However, it is up to the Homeland Security Secretary, in consultation with an advisory committee of House and Senate leadership, to determine which candidates qualify as “major” and thus warrant protection.
Given these circumstances, the initial refusal to grant Secret Service protection to such a high-profile figure as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was particularly surprising and has raised questions about the criteria and timing of such security measures for presidential candidates.
Kennedy addressed the Libertarian Convention in Washington, D.C., on May 25, 2024, further highlighting his active and public role in the presidential race. His heightened visibility, combined with the recent threats and historical context, underscores the importance of ensuring his safety as he continues his campaign.
