In an extraordinary and unexpected incident, former left-wing Slovakian Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák and ex-Prime Minister Igor Matovič engaged in a physical altercation during a press conference on immigration near the Slovak government palace in the heart of Bratislava. The recent surge in immigration, primarily driven by an influx of people from Ukraine, has seen foreigners make up approximately 5.13 percent of the population, with their numbers steadily growing. In December 2022 alone, Slovakia witnessed an increase of about 111,076 foreign residents compared to the previous year, marking a notable 66.3 percent rise.
These changes have prompted intense debate and political divisions within the country, with ex-Prime Minister Igor Matovič advocating for stronger border controls and the preservation of Slovak culture and identity.
The Incident Unfolds
On Wednesday, Matovic drove a pick-up truck to Kalinak’s televised SMER-SSD news conference and, through mounted loudspeakers, accused him of poor immigration policies when he was interior minister in Fico’s cabinets. His pickup truck was emblazoned with a banner reading, “We will not hand you over to the mafia.” This slogan reflects Matovič’s deeply held belief that the previous governments, particularly the ruling SMER-SD party and its leaders, including Robert Kaliňák and three-time former Prime Minister Robert Fico, are mired in corruption.
In the midst of this charged political climate, the altercation between Matovič and Kaliňák took place. Matovič began by questioning the presence of “illegal immigrants” and accused the party of inviting him and others to a public press conference. However, he insinuated that they were not pleased with his attendance, suggesting they intended to obstruct him.
Matovič’s Accusations

He pinpointed a specific date, March 13, 2018, and challenged the attendees regarding Amendments to Slovakia’s Act on Employment Services law, which allowed illegals to easily enter the country. Matovič alleged that this law, which allowed foreigners to come to Slovakia, was akin to a “Mafia law” and was passed by individuals like Kaliňák. He criticized the attendees for approving the law and questioned their motivations, particularly in the lead-up to elections.
Matovič expressed outrage at the party’s attempt to portray themselves as problem solvers when he believed they were responsible for the immigration issues. He accused them of destroying Slovakia, leading to the departure of thousands of Slovakian citizens and causing a refugee crisis. Using strong language, he condemned the party members, calling them thieves and accusing them of corruption. Matovič declared his determination to address the situation and expressed a readiness to physically remove individuals if necessary.
The Altercation
Kalinak went to the car and knocked on the driver’s windows as the former PM’s aides scrambled to disconnect the speakers at the back of the truck. Matovic then opened the door, and Kalinak leaned in and tried to grab the microphone from him while Matovic tried to push him away and swore at him, calling him a mafioso.
Video footage showed Matovic kicking at Kalinak and another SMER-SSED punching Matovic before police intervened to separate the two sides.
