Daring Rescue: Italian Special Forces Thwart Migrant Hijacking of Turkish Cargo Vessel

In a gripping turn of events, Italian special forces launched a daring operation to rescue a Turkish cargo vessel, Galata Seaways, which had been seized by a group of illegal immigrants off the coast of Naples. The courageous intervention of the Italian special forces, popularly known as the “Leatherheads,” resulted in the liberation of the ship’s crew and thwarted the hijacking attempt by the migrants.

Prompted by an SOS distress call from the ship’s commander, Italian special forces swiftly deployed helicopters to the scene, capturing breathtaking images of the dramatic rescue mission. The Leatherheads skillfully freed the vessel’s hull, foiling the intentions of the illegal immigrants who had armed themselves with knives and sought to hijack the ship.

The intervention by the Italian Special Forces, specifically the San Marco Brigade, culminated in the capture of the hijackers late in the evening. Their swift action and expertise ensured the safety of the 22 crew members held captive by the migrants along the coast of Naples.

A total of 15 migrants were identified and located on board the Galata Seaways. Upon arrival in Naples, all 15 individuals disembarked from the vessel. However, three of them required medical attention and were hospitalized at the Ospedale del Mare. Two individuals were treated for a mild illness, while one suffered hypothermia.

With the coordination of the Naples prosecutor’s office, the police and finance departments are conducting a comprehensive investigation to shed light on the events that unfolded on board the hijacked ship. Their primary objective is to ascertain the positions and roles of the migrants involved, providing a clearer understanding of the situation.

Preliminary investigations have resulted in charges against three migrants for possessing weapons. The possibility of additional charges, including hijacking, is under evaluation by the prosecutor’s office, with a decision expected in the coming days.
