The unveiling of the official posters for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has ignited a firestorm of criticism, particularly over the conspicuous absence of Christian symbols and French national identity. The decision to replace the cross atop the Invalides dome with an arrow and the omission of the French flag has drawn sharp condemnation, with many accusing the organizers of blatantly erasing their country’s proud Christian heritage and diminishing its national identity.
Marion Maréchal, Vice Chairman of the Reconquête party, questioned the motives behind the removal of the cross and the absence of the French flag, asking, “What’s the point of hosting the Olympics in France if we’re going to hide who we are?” Member of Parliament N. Dupont-Aignan accused those behind the poster of “denying France to the point of distorting reality to erase its history,” emphasizing the profound significance of the cross atop the Invalides dome.
President of Les Républicains Eric Ciotti branded the artwork as “scandalous,” arguing that France dishonors itself by renouncing its history and culture. Representatives from the Rassemblement National echoed these sentiments, with spokesperson Thomas Ménagé lamenting the poster as a “sadly ridiculous example of France’s great erasure” and Nicolas Meizonnet condemning what he described as relentless “wokism” that must be fought against.
In response to the outcry, the government sought to downplay the controversy, dismissing the poster as “just a drawing.” The artist behind the controversial design, Ugo Gattoni, defended his work, stating that his intention was not to faithfully represent objects or buildings but to evoke them in a surreal and festive manner. Gattoni emphasized the multitude of details embedded in the posters, from iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower to references to Marseille Marina and Paralympic origins in Stoke Mandeville.
However, for many, the issue transcends mere artistic interpretation, tapping into deeper concerns about preserving France’s Christian identity and cultural heritage. As tensions escalate, the debate underscores the broader struggle over national identity and the left’s agenda to erase or dilute traditional French culture and its Christian heritage.
