Dehumanization of Care: Testimony Reveals the Horrifying Treatment of Elderly in Assisted Living Facilities during the Pandemic

The testimony of Eleanor Sparling at The National Citizen’s Inquiry (NCI) provides a poignant glimpse into the harrowing reality endured by elderly individuals in assisted living facilities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sparling, a former healthcare aide, courageously exposes the distressing and appalling treatment these vulnerable individuals faced, including prolonged isolation in their rooms and the absence of visitors. Her testimony sheds light on the unbearable conditions experienced by the elderly, revealing a deeply troubling state of affairs within assisted living facilities.

A Life Stripped of Joy

Sparling highlights the stark contrast between the pre-pandemic and pandemic eras in assisted living facilities. Prior to Covid-19, the primary goal was to enhance the quality of life for residents, making their days more joyous and personable. Activities, laughter, family visits, and celebrations were the norm. Then suddenly, the outbreak of the pandemic abruptly shifted the focus to saving lives, but at the cost of stripping away the fun and personal interactions that brought comfort to the elderly.

Lockdowns as Prison Sentences

Her testimonial reveals the severe impact of lockdown measures on the elderly. Once a positive case was detected, residents were isolated in their rooms for prolonged periods, ranging up to eight weeks. The emotional toll of this isolation was immense, with families resorting to visiting through windows, leaving balloons and gifts that were kept away for over a month to minimize the risk of viral transmission. The elderly felt abandoned and suffered mentally and emotionally due to the lack of human connection.

Dignity Denied

Sparling recounts the deterioration of hygiene standards during the lockdowns. Residents were denied bathroom showers, and their proper hygiene needs were neglected. The absence of regular hygiene routines and limited access to tub rooms compounded their distress. Additionally, the excessive use of disposable materials, such as styrofoam, resulted in a wasteful approach, disregarding the environment and sustainability.

The Emotional Toll on Families

The families of elderly residents faced unimaginable anguish as they witnessed their loved ones’ suffering. Unable to provide physical comfort and support, they were reduced to tears outside the windows of the facilities. The lack of transparency and restrictions on sharing information with the media further added to their frustration, leaving them helpless and without recourse.

The Dehumanization of Care

The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) hindered essential human connection between the staff and residents. Masks and face shields prevented effective communication, particularly for individuals with hearing impairments or dementia. The basic dignity that elderly residents deserved in their final years was compromised, leading to feelings of isolation and abandonment.

The Erosion of Rights

Sparling brings attention to the alarming removal of the residents’ Bill of Rights during the pandemic. The fundamental rights to family, friendship, and religion were disregarded, further exacerbating the suffering endured by the elderly. These rights, essential for maintaining a sense of humanity and well-being, were cast aside in the name of infection control.

Eleanor Sparling’s testimony is a powerful indictment of the deplorable treatment inflicted upon elderly individuals in assisted living facilities during the pandemic. It underscores the urgent need for reform and calls for a comprehensive reevaluation of our societal priorities. The elderly deserve unwavering dignity, respect, and compassionate care, even in the face of a crisis. Regrettably, governments have failed to learn from these harrowing experiences, as institutions remain unaccountable, and the mistreatment of vulnerable elders persists without acknowledgment or action from officials.

  • I remember when doctors made housecalls. Back then medicine was not pharmaceutical salesmanship. Now, it is business without empathy. My best friend’s father was a doctor, and so was my great grandpappy. My friend’s father ran a medical clinic. When a patient had no money they would make him food, or give him deli products in exchange for services. Much different times. During the scamdemic, hospitals made money off kung-flu deaths. Especially those respirator killings! Stay healthy and avoid doctors and Rx drugs.

  • “May 17, 2023, Krystal Ball, cohost of the online show “Breaking Point,” interviewed Kennedy. According to Ball, Kennedy’s “vaccine skepticism” and “antivaccine advocacy” is a “red line” that disqualifies him from holding the highest office
She repeatedly interrupted Kennedy with Big Pharma talking points — putting her own ignorance on public display — and didn’t allow him to answer her questions. Kennedy asked her to show him where he got things wrong many times, and she deflected with broad generalities
Several journalists and political commentators, including Jimmy Dore, Viva Frei, Kim Iversen and Glenn Greenwald have critiqued Ball’s attempted smear. In the end, the only one who looked bad was Ball herself”

  • Avoid vax and boosted people too. They are disease vectors. They shed and infect people around them. Don’t eat out at food joints either. Most people that work in food and beverage are perverts, and have no idea about hygiene or business code. Many states do not mandate food service training or hygiene code. Many do not know how to wash their hands properly. Not making a joke.

  • I’d like to make 2 corrections in this testimony. There were 3 dumpsters and the frequency which they were emptied increased . Also we lost around 140 since covid began not in the second wave. Sorry for this I’ve never done this before . Excuse my mistakes please . Thank you
