The father and the three individuals he enlisted were “familiar to the courts, with certain members among them possessing criminal records, notably in drug trafficking.” The girl’s father has already been “sentenced in October 2014 to four years in prison, including one year suspended,” a sentence accompanied by three years of probation for three years for a robbery.
The father and his friend’s pursuit of revenge climaxed in a violent confrontation, during which the Guinean national was subjected to physical assault and whipped using an electric cable. The father’s motivations were complex, driven by the overwhelming desire to protect his child and his frustration with what he perceived as a systemic issue within the French judicial system. He believed that French courts often meted out lenient sentences to migrant offenders, a problem exacerbated by their reluctance to impose deportations even when warranted.

Detractors raised significant concerns regarding whether an eighteen-month sentence adequately matched the crime’s severity and safeguarded society from potential recurrences. Moreover, the court’s ruling inadvertently garnered more support for the father’s impulsive response of resorting to vigilantism and assaulting the migrant.

On August 21, 2023, an apparently dissatisfied customer of the Magdeburg Foreigners Authority demolished the glass entrance area of the authority’s headquarters. Security guards as well as passers-by watched in amazement without intervening.
The police arrived 20 minutes late. One of their spokesmen tried to reinterpret their intervention in a positive way. He stated:
“Due to quick action of the police, the perpetrator was found near the crime scene. Several criminal proceedings were initiated against the perpetrator, a dismissal from the scene was issued, and a danger warning was carried out.”
After the endangerment warning, the officers let the asylum seeker from Cameroon go. The immigration office remained closed for the rest of the day on August 21, 2023.

As reported by Focus, Magdeburg Mayor Simone Borris also commented on the incident:
“The aggressiveness and the behavior make me stunned. After the incident in March of this year, when around 20 people tried to break into the Foreigners’ Registration Office, another line was crossed today. The psychological consequences for our employees cannot yet be assessed.”
Back in the 1980s, most Germans would not have reacted to such an event with a nervous frenzy, but would have given the rioter a possibly salutary thrashing on the spot. Even by international standards, the Magdeburg authorities’ approach is unusual.
