A recent study conducted by the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony (KFN) has caused significant concerns after revealing the attitudes of Muslim students towards German laws and Islamic principles. The study surveyed 8,539 ninth-grade students, with approximately 300 identifying as Muslims, regarding property crimes, violent crimes, and Islamism. Disturbingly, a majority of Muslim students (67.8 percent) expressed that they prioritize the rules of the Quran over German laws. While the sample size of Muslim students surveyed is not fully representative, the findings have raised concerns among experts and politicians.
Some key findings of the study include:
- Almost half (45.8 percent) of Muslim students believe that an Islamic theocracy represents the best form of government.
- 35.3 percent stated they “understand violence against people who insult Allah or the Prophet Mohammed,” with 21.2 percent believing that “the threat to Islam from the Western world justifies Muslims using violence to defend” (see graphic).
Experts and politicians have reacted shocked by these revelations. CDU interior expert Christoph de Vries (49) remarked, “The study reveals the extent to which political Islam has permeated German society.” De Vries emphasized the need to address what he sees as systematic indoctrination, stating, “Multiculturalism has failed, and we now require clarity and consistency to counter the spread of intolerance.”
Karin Prien (58), Schleswig-Holstein’s school minister and CDU federal deputy, described the findings as “shocking” and highlighted the failure to effectively instill democratic values. Prien stressed the shared responsibility of families, schools, state institutions, and mosque communities in addressing this issue. She also called for a reassessment of the role of social media platforms like TikTok in disseminating Islamic extremist content.
Stefan Düll (59), Teacher President, echoed Prien’s concerns, emphasizing the need for enhanced democratic education aligned with the principles of the Basic Law and advocating a zero-tolerance approach towards Islam.
Hamburg’s school senator, Ksenija Bekeris (46, SPD), labeled the numbers “alarming” and urged for a significant bolstering of democracy education within schools, beginning as early as daycare.
While Thuringia lacks comparable studies or figures, it acknowledges an increase in antisemitic incidents. However, the state emphasizes the importance of educating immigrant students about democratic values.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the issue of Islam in schools is recognized, and schools have implemented a specific program to assist students transitioning out of the educational system, commonly referred to as the “signpost” program. This program, primarily utilized by schools, aims to support students as they navigate their post-school options.
In January, a concerning Islamic incident came to light at a comprehensive school in Neuss, where three Muslim teenagers harassed classmates and insisted on adherence to Sharia rules, including gender separation in class.
