Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent speech on former President Donald Trump’s election victory and border security resounds with the urgency of safeguarding Europe’s future. Addressing the European Political Community’s fifth meeting, Orbán pulled no punches, signaling a bold new era of conservative unity between the U.S. and Hungary. This moment, Orbán remarked, is a “fantastic result” and one he celebrated with fitting enthusiasm.
Orbán described the victory as marking a seismic shift, one that challenges Europe’s softening stance on migration and border defense. “The world will change. It will change faster than we think,” he declared. He believes that Europe stands at a critical juncture and that nations must urgently defend their borders or risk losing their sovereignty entirely. “There are big, huge issues at play. War or peace? Migration or defense,” Orbán asked.
Hungary’s tough stance on migration is well-known, and Orbán proudly recounted Hungary’s decisive steps in 2015, when his government built a border fence, defying EU norms. “We built up our fence when this was still considered an ancient crime,” Orbán said, alluding to the backlash Hungary faced for taking a hard line on illegal immigration. But today, Hungary’s approach has become a model. “The Hungarian model is that you submit your application, stay out of the country…if the answer is yes, you can come in, if the answer no, you cannot come in,” Orbán stated, noting that no alternative has yet proven more effective.
Orbán’s “rebellion against judicial activism” struck a powerful chord. He lamented how Europe’s judicial systems often undermine government policies to secure borders. “The results achieved in the interest of stemming migration simply…fall apart,” he warned, noting that Hungary remains the only nation consistently opposing this erosion of sovereignty. Orbán emphasized that Hungary’s approach defends not only Hungarian citizens but the whole of Europe, a stance that has earned him fierce opposition from left-wing European institutions. Yet, he stood firm: “We want to protect our citizens. No one can come in without our permission.”
The Trump administration’s hardline immigration policies were a clear inspiration to Orbán, who sees in Trump a kindred spirit—a leader unafraid to put national security above politically correct posturing. “With the American election… the camp of parties on the side of peace is growing,” Orbán observed, celebrating the prospect of a European coalition willing to embrace a stricter immigration policy. With Trump’s influence, Orbán believes Europe may finally turn away from its dangerous “open-border” policies.
Orbán’s speech concluded with an unwavering message: for Europe to stand firm, it must resist external pressures, maintain border security, and resist judicial overreach that hinders national protection. The Hungarian Prime Minister’s steadfast resolve serves as a rallying call for all Europeans to protect their borders, defend their sovereignty, and secure a future where peace and stability triumph over chaotic migration and dangerous liberal policies.
