A chilling Islamic terrorist plot targeting a Jewish center in New York has been foiled. The Justice Department announced late Friday that a Pakistani national living in Canada, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan (alias Shahzeb Hadoon), was planning to carry out a massacre in the name of the jihadist militia Islamic State (ISIS). The attack was intended for October 7th, marking the anniversary of the brutal Islamic massacre in Israel.

On October 7th, 2023, the Islamic terrorist organization Hamas launched a horrific attack on Israel, killing over 1,180 people and kidnapping 250 more to the Gaza Strip. A year later, Hamas and Islamic militants continue to hold 130 hostages, and the war in Gaza rages on. This attack serves as a painful reminder of the ever-present threat posed by Islamic terrorism.

Khan, a 20-year-old radicalized Pakistani, was arrested in Canada on September 4th at the request of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. He was charged with “attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization (ISIS).” According to the Justice Department, Khan intended to enter the United States “to commit a massacre at a Jewish center in New York” and “murder as many Jews as possible in the name of ISIS.”

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed the foiled attack, stating, “The defendant planned a terrorist attack on or around October 7 with the explicit goal of slaughtering Jews in the name of ISIS.” FBI Director Christopher Wray added, “Khan was determined to kill Jews here in the United States, less than a year after Hamas’ horrific attack on Israel.”

The investigation revealed that Khan had been communicating with undercover law enforcement agents (UCs) and was actively plotting to carry out a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn. He specifically instructed the UCs to acquire “AR-style rifles” and “ammunition” for his attack, noting that he would “slit their throats” with “some good hunting knives.” His brutal intentions were unmistakable as he identified the specific area in the Jewish center where the massacre would take place, stating, “we are going to NYC to slaughter them.”

Khan chose October 7 as the date for his attack, recognizing it as the one-year anniversary of the Hamas assault on Israel. He also targeted October 11, Yom Kippur, saying, “Oct 7 they will surely have some protests and Oct 11 is Yom Kippur.” Khan boasted about the perfect opportunity to strike in New York, claiming that “New York is perfect to target Jews” due to its large Jewish population. His words revealed his chilling goal: “even if we don’t attack an event, we could rack up easily a lot of Jews.”

The fact that this Pakistani jihadist was plotting such an attack highlights the reality that radical Muslims continue to target Jews and Western society at large. The U.S. hosts the world’s largest Jewish population outside of Israel, with about six million Jews living in the country, making it a primary target for Islamic terrorists.

Khan had been under surveillance since November 2023 due to his threatening messages on online platforms, his use of encrypted communication, and his distribution of ISIS propaganda videos and literature. During his planning, Khan even discussed arranging rental properties near the target location and paying a human smuggler to help him cross the U.S.-Canada border. His ultimate goal was clear: “if we succeed with our plan, this would be the largest attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.”

The FBI, alongside Canadian authorities, apprehended Khan just 12 miles from the U.S.-Canada border on September 4, preventing the attack. Khan used three separate vehicles in an attempt to evade detection while traveling across Canada toward the United States.

This thwarted attack is another grim reminder of the ongoing threat posed by Islam. The Islamic religious ideology that drives ISIS and Hamas knows no borders and continues to infiltrate Western societies. Khan’s plot to massacre innocent Jews in New York, inspired by the same Quranic hatred that fueled the October 7 Hamas attack, should serve as a wake-up call to the West: Islam remains an imminent threat, and its adherents will stop at nothing to carry out their violent agenda. Meanwhile, the United States continues to leave its borders wide open, allowing these threats to enter our country daily.

The FBI’s New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles field offices are actively investigating the case, while the Justice Department seeks Khan’s extradition from Canada. Authorities have praised the quick action of Canadian law enforcement in helping to thwart what could have been a devastating terrorist attack on U.S. soil.
