On Monday, December 11, a man was arrested in the 17th arrondissement of Paris shortly before 9 PM after allegedly confronting a woman on the corner of Boulevard Pereire and Avenue des Ternes. Reportedly wielding a kitchen knife approximately 40 centimeters long, the man is said to have shouted the Islamic battle cry, “Allah Akbar,” and inquired if the woman was Jewish. According to the woman’s statement, she believed that had she affirmed being Jewish, the man would have violently stabbed her in the abdomen.
The knife believed to be used in the incident was later discovered in a trash can by police. The Paris prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation into the matter as a case of ‘violence with a weapon motivated by the victim’s actual or supposed ethnic or religious background.’ This offense is subject to a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.
