In Islam, seemingly minor practices like growing and dying your beard can hold significant meaning and serve as symbols of religious commitment. Prophet Muhammad’s command to maintain a beard and color your beard was aimed at distinguishing Muslims from ‘infidels.’
As author Raymond Ibrahim explains, Muhammad wanted his Muslims to look different from infidel Christians and Jews; he ordered them to “trim closely the moustache and grow the beard.” Accordingly, all Sunni schools of law maintain that it is forbidden, a “major sin,” for men to shave their beards—unless, of course, it is part of a stratagem against the infidel, in which case it is permissible.
Omar Ould Hamaha, a devoutly religious Muslim and proud jihadist in the North of Mali, shares why Muslims dye their beards red/orange with Henna, which was done by the Prophet Muhammad, who advised his followers to do the same. He delves into the symbolism behind the colored beard and once again shows Islam’s incompatibility with non-Muslims.
He begins by emphasizing that the concept of jihad is not a personal choice but a divine imposition and obligation mandated by Allah in the Holy Qur’an. “For me, it is not a choice; it is an obligation that I am fulfilling,” says Hamaha. His words underline the deeply rooted belief and scriptural command among devout Muslims that jihad is a fundamental duty that they are bound to carry out.
Regarding the red beard, Hamaha stressed that his beard is not his natural color but one dyed with Henna, following the Sunnah (tradition) of the Prophet Muhammad. As he explains, this practice aligns with the Prophet’s teachings and is an essential part of his tradition.
Hamaha’s justification for this tradition lies in the Prophet’s instruction to “not be like the Jews,” alluding to the fact that Jews do not change the color of their beards. By dyeing his beard with Henna, Hamaha and other Muslims aim to distinguish themselves from Jews and Christians, aligning with the Qur’an.
He proudly states, “So we have to disagree with Jews and Christians. So that’s why I dyed my beard with henna so that I can disagree with Jews and Christians,” emphasizing his commitment to adhering to Islamic text, honoring Muhammad and differentiating himself from non-Muslims.
Notable Religious Muslims Who Have Dyed Their Beards Red
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed tinted his beard red for his trial. Since he was in prison, he had to improvise and use what was available. He rubbed it with fruit juice and crushed berries from his breakfast to change the color.
At the time, journalists asked whether someone had been smuggling contraband henna to Mohammed, who is held at a top-security camp whose very location on the Guantanamo base is kept secret.
A Pentagon spokesman, Army Lieutenant Colonel Todd Breasseale, revealed,
“I can confirm that Mr Mohammed did not avail himself of any outside-the-JTF means to dye his beard, but did craft his own natural means by which to do it,” Breasseale said, explaining the inmate used fruit juice and berries from breakfast.
The Army Lieutenant Colonel said he did not know Mohammed’s reasoning, once again highlighting our country’s dangerous naivete when it comes to understanding the threats posed by Muslims and their ability to identify jihad threats.
The U.S. intelligence community used to consider a sudden turn to the devout observance of Islam to be a possible indicator of jihad terror activity, making the person worth watching. All that was changed during the Obama administration; to consider such possibilities would be “Islamophobic.”

Abdulqadir Mumin
Abdul al-Qādir Mū‘min, potentially born in the early 1960s, is a Somali religious Muslim who currently leads the Islamic State in Somalia, having previously held a senior religious authority position within al-Shabaab. He is known as ‘The Orange-Bearded Jihadi’ and, in keeping with Muhammad, he also dyes his beard.
On August 31, 2016, he was designated as a ‘Specially Designated Global Terrorist’ by the United States Department of State.
Originally a Somali native who later obtained British citizenship and resided in London, he eventually traveled to join jihadists in Somalia. However, he has since departed from Al-Shabab, the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group responsible for a series of deadly attacks in Kenya and Somalia as part of its efforts to establish an Islamic state in East Africa.
Mū‘min had given sermons at the mosque attended by Michael Adebolajo, one of the Islamic terrorists responsible for the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby. Mū‘min publicly burned his British passport before a crowd of supporters in a mosque.

Abdul Majeed al-Zindani
Yemen national Abd al-Majeed al-Zindani is a U.S. and U.N.-designated recruiter and fundraiser for al-Qaeda and a reported “one-time mentor of Osama bin Laden,” according to the New York Times.
According to the Counter Extremism Project, “the U.S. Treasury accuses al-Zindani of actively recruiting for al-Qaeda training camps and playing a “key role” in purchasing weapons for the terror group. The U.S. also accuses him of financially supporting Hamas. He reportedly operated out of Yemen and then fled to Saudi Arabia. After a period of house arrest in Saudi Arabia, al-Zindani is currently believed to live in Istanbul, Turkey.”
He is a prominent figure in the world of Islamic jihad. Born in the early 1960s, he currently leads the Islamic State in Somalia, where he plays a key role in advancing radical ideologies. His journey through various Islamic affiliations includes founding educational institutions to combat secularism, co-founding the political party al-Islah in Yemen, and establishing al-Imam University. Conclusion
The practice of dyeing one’s beard red, deeply rooted in Islamic tradition, serves as a powerful symbol of religious commitment. It is essential for law enforcement agencies and officials worldwide to receive education on the nuances of this practice and its potential implications.
From Omar Ould Hamaha’s unwavering commitment to Prophet Muhammad’s teachings to the infamous figures who followed suit, the red-bearded tradition serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and threats within the Islamic faith. Citizens, along with law enforcement agencies, should remain vigilant and alert to Muslims growing “religious” beards, especially those who dye them orange/red while living in the West.
Hmmm, makes red beardos a target. Also, a beard can be used as weapon against the jihadi. Much easier to control the head, and drive a knee or elbow into the face. 😁
All they need now is red dyed hair, a red clown nose, and voila —a new Bozohamhead clown show.
They all look like satanic orangutans. Ban satanic orangutans.
