Leaked Memo Exposes Germany's Plan to Dismiss Police and Civil Servants Who Support AfD, as Alice Weidel Vows Legal Fight

AfD leader and chancellor candidate Alice Weidel denounced the move as a “blatant attack on political freedom, a grave abuse of office, and a politically motivated purge,” vowing the party would fight back “with all legal means.

The German left-wing government has escalated its politically motivated campaign against opposition voices, now targeting not only police officers but also civil servants and others aligned with the surging right-wing Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). In a move that reeks of authoritarian overreach, German police are reportedly considering dismissing officers affiliated with the AfD—a drastic attack on political diversity that raises urgent questions about the state of democracy in Germany.

With the AfD polling in second place ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections on February 23, 2025, the establishment appears desperate to curb its momentum by any means necessary. The Christian Democratic CDU may lead in the polls, but the AfD’s rise reflects growing dissatisfaction with Germany’s current direction under its left-wing government. Instead of addressing the root causes of this shift, the government is deploying institutions, including law enforcement, to suppress dissent.

Leaked Memo: A Threat to Civil Liberties?

An internal police memo leaked to Junge Freiheit explicitly singles out the AfD, stating that police officers associated with the party might face “disciplinary consequences, including dismissal.” The memo further asserts that officers supporting parties classified as “right-wing extremists” pose potential loyalty issues. This targeted language reveals a clear agenda to marginalize and intimidate anyone aligned with the AfD.

The memo refers to a decree issued in August 2024 by Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser, which explicitly threatens disciplinary proceedings against civil servants, including dismissal, if they are members of the AfD or stand for election on the party’s platform. This decree was particularly directed at state elections in Thuringia and Saxony, where the AfD has been classified as “certainly right-wing extremist” by the respective state constitutional protection agencies.

In February 2024, RAIR exposed a video of Nancy Faeser openly declaring her intent to ‘take away their income, weapons, and smash their networks,’ revealing the government’s unrelenting pursuit of conservative opposition under the guise of combating extremism. This rhetoric aligns with her August 2024 decree, illustrating a coordinated effort to stifle political dissent.

However, the classification in Thuringia is highly controversial, especially after the state’s constitutional protection agency president, Stephan Kramer, reportedly suppressed an exonerating report. This suppression highlights the politicization of legal frameworks to justify actions against the AfD.

Constitutional law professor Volker Boehme-Neßler has labeled this move “a real scandal,” highlighting that civil servants, including police officers, have the right to be members of political parties as long as those parties are not banned. Boehme-Neßler’s warning underscores the deeply troubling implications of punishing individuals based solely on their political affiliations.

AfD party leader and chancellor candidate Alice Weidel condemned the move on Wednesday, calling it “an attack on political freedom of opinion and a violation of the fundamental rights underpinning the independence of our security authorities.” Weidel accused Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser of “a serious abuse of office” and described the actions as “politically motivated purges within government institutions.” She vowed that the AfD would fight back “using all legal means available.

A Politicized Judiciary and Police Force

This development reflects a troubling pattern: left-wing dominance over Germany’s institutions being weaponized against political opponents. By targeting police officers—a group symbolizing public safety and order—the government sends a chilling message: dissent will not be tolerated.

The leaked memo on the Federal Police intranet, dated January 7, 2025, warns officers: “Candidacy for a confirmed right-wing extremist party? Not a good idea as a federal civil servant!” It further specifies that even passive membership in the AfD could justify disciplinary action. This radical approach undermines the impartiality of Germany’s police force, pressuring officers to align with the government’s political narrative. Such politicization risks eroding public trust in the police, creating a dangerous precedent that could deepen societal divisions.

A Warning for Democracy

This assault on AfD-aligned police officers is a stark reminder of the lengths to which Germany’s left-wing government will go to silence its rivals. The fact that members of what is expected to be Germany’s largest opposition party after the federal elections are being threatened with exclusion from the civil service shows the extent of this suppression. If police officers can be threatened with dismissal for their political beliefs, who will be targeted next? Such tactics are reminiscent of authoritarian regimes, not the democratic ideals Germany claims to uphold.

Germany must decide what kind of democracy it wants to be. Will it allow open political competition, or will it continue down this dangerous path of censorship and political persecution? The answer to that question will determine the future of the AfD and Germany as a whole.
