In response to the influx of migrants from Belarus, Lithuania, like Poland, has started building a wall along its border. It is now complete, but major video surveillance systems have been implemented to combat damage attributed partly to the Belarusian border guards.
Meanwhile, in the United States, thousands of migrants have already surged across the border in December, taking advantage of U.S. President Joe Biden’s weak deportation and border security guidelines.
The Lithuanian army will soon stop monitoring the border with Belarus.
Now that the country has finished building a physical barrier and a video surveillance system over 500 kilometers, the border guards can fend for themselves. A wall 4 meters high, including 60 cm of barbed wire, has been built since the summer.
The Lithuanian government accuses Belarusian border guards of encouraging the passage of migrants from the Middle East to Lithuania. They would also be responsible for damage to the perimeter wall. In all, 350 cases of damage were recorded by border guards.
“Recently, we noticed that the physical barrier was damaged precisely where there is currently no video surveillance system,” said Rimantas Petrauskas, deputy head of the Lithuanian border guards.
The European Union imposed sanctions in 2021 against Belarus in reaction to the fraudulent election of Alexander Lukashenko. In retaliation, Minsk voluntarily provoked the influx of migrants from the Middle East towards its borders with the EU. In all, 4,200 people have arrived illegally in Lithuania since last year, mainly from the Middle East and Africa, who managed to cross the border from Belarus.
This situation was similar to the crises experienced by Latvia and Poland.
