Madrid’s regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has fiercely defended Israel’s right to protect itself against ongoing Islamic terrorist attacks, criticizing those who demand the country remain passive in the face of such violence. Speaking on the matter, Ayuso expressed frustration at the hypocrisy of expecting Israel to allow its own destruction, calling it both “perverse” and “unfair.”
“It is perverse to ask Israel to allow themselves to be annihilated. It would open the door to evil,” Ayuso remarked, highlighting the daily barrage of terrorist threats and bombings that Israel endures. She pointed to the crucial role of Israel’s defense systems, like the Iron Dome, in preventing massive casualties.
She further criticized the idea of asking any nation, including Spain, to refrain from responding when faced with atrocities such as kidnappings, rapes, and murders, alluding to the October 7 Islamic attacks on Israeli civilians. Ayuso warned that turning a blind eye to terrorism would only embolden further violence, not just against Israel but against the West as a whole, as Israel’s fight is part of a broader defense of Western values.
Ayuso also emphasized the context surrounding the October 7 Islamic attacks, noting that they occurred as Israel was on the verge of signing a peace agreement with Saudi Arabia, accusing Iran and other actors of seeking to destabilize the region and destroy Israel.
Her remarks have drawn attention, particularly for her condemnation of those who appear to downplay the severity of the situation, urging the global community to recognize the inherent danger in asking Israel to stand down in the face of such an existential threat.
