On the night of August 12th to 13th, a violent sexual assault occurred in the middle of the street outside a nightclub in La Roche-sur-Yon, France. A 21-year-old Algerian Muslim migrant, who possessed several fake immigration documents and was described as ‘very religious,’ has been arrested and incarcerated.” As part of the investigation, the illegal migrant was placed in provisional detention on Wednesday, August 30th.
Following the victim’s complaint, a judicial investigation was launched against an unknown perpetrator. Police investigators quickly traced a suspect. The man was arrested in a hair salon in the town on Monday, August 28th. The 21-year-old, of Algerian nationality and in an irregular immigration situation, was placed in police custody. Initially, he denied the accusations against him.
However, on Wednesday, August 30th, the suspect altered his account in front of the investigating judge, acknowledging that he had participated in what he described as “consensual sexual relations” with the victim. Deputy prosecutor Alice Leduc noted, “The man’s stance on the events is ambivalent. This marks the third version of events, making it difficult to ascertain a complete admission.”
Therefore, the prosecutor requested his provisional detention “due to his irregular status in the territory, the potential criminal sentence, and his position concerning the events.”
The suspect admitted to “using fake documents” under two known identities with the police. His lawyer, Meriem Abkoui, emphasized that her client’s criminal record “is clean for both identities.” She explained in his defense that her client “is very religious and was afraid of being judged by his brother for this extramarital relationship.”
The Islamic defendant explained to the investigating judge that he “left the nightclub with the victim” and that they were “both intoxicated.” His lawyer requested that the Algerian be placed under judicial supervision at his brother’s residence during the investigation, a request that the magistrate denied.
“There is enough evidence to consider that you are involved in the alleged acts,” the magistrate declared. She also cited the risk of “repetition of the acts given the modus operandi used” and the public disturbances generated by the events. The man was incarcerated in the La Roche-sur-Yon detention center.
