Orbán Confronts EU Hypocrisy: Slams Failing Ukraine Strategy and Defends Hungary’s Sovereignty (Video)

In a powerful speech addressing the European Parliament, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán didn’t hold back as he slammed the European Commission for its handling of key issues, particularly the war in Ukraine and its broader political agenda. Orbán, known for his unapologetic defense of Hungarian sovereignty, made it clear that the EU’s leadership has lost its way, shifting from a neutral body meant to safeguard treaties to a politically biased institution that targets member states like Hungary for daring to go against the grain.

Orbán opened his speech by calling out the leftist political propaganda that has taken root in the European Parliament. He expressed frustration at how the session, meant to discuss Hungary’s presidency agenda, had devolved into a platform for launching politically motivated attacks against his country. Instead of engaging in a constructive dialogue, Orbán noted that the EU has increasingly used its power to push a one-sided narrative that silences opposition.

A Failing Ukraine Strategy

Orbán didn’t hold back on the EU’s failing Ukraine strategy. According to him, the current approach, which centers around escalating the conflict through military aid and sanctions, is a disaster. “The truth is we are losing on the Ukrainian front,” Orbán stated bluntly. He argued that hundreds of thousands of lives have already been lost, and unless the EU pivots to a strategy based on diplomacy and peace, the situation will only deteriorate further.

He attacked the European Commission’s policy on sanctions, accusing EU leaders of hypocrisy. While Brussels continues to berate Hungary for maintaining economic ties with Russia, Western European countries have quietly been circumventing their own sanctions—funneling billions into Russian oil and gas markets. Orbán exposed this double standard, calling out the EU for its selective outrage and failure to practice what it preaches. Hungary, Orbán emphasized, has been consistent in its approach to Russia, operating transparently while the same cannot be said for major EU powers like Germany and France.

Defending Hungary’s Sovereignty

On domestic issues, Orbán took the opportunity to defend Hungary’s policies on immigration and family values, both of which have been at the center of the EU’s relentless attacks on his government. Orbán rejected the left-wing accusations that Hungary is somehow complicit in enabling human trafficking. He pointed to the thousands of human smugglers Hungary has arrested and expelled, a major contrast to the EU’s criticism. Orbán made it clear: Hungary has done more to protect Europe’s borders than most of the countries attacking it.

Furthermore, he reiterated Hungary’s firm stance on protecting traditional family values enshrined in the Hungarian constitution. Hungary, he said, defends marriage as being between a man and a woman. This position has drawn the ire of EU elites, who are determined to impose their progressive social agenda on all member states. Orbán condemned the EU’s misrepresentation of Hungary’s policies, emphasizing that Hungary’s democratic processes and constitutional values are grounded in the will of its people—not in the whims of Brussels bureaucrats.

An Attack on Hungary’s Presidency

Orbán expressed deep disappointment that what was supposed to be a discussion about Hungary’s presidency agenda had instead devolved into a political attack. Instead of addressing real issues facing the European Union, like economic competitiveness and migration, the session turned into an assault on Hungary’s sovereignty. Orbán made it clear that he would not stand idly by while Hungary is targeted for simply defending its national interests.

He warned that the EU’s increasing politicization is a threat to European unity, as it seeks to punish countries that refuse to conform to its one-size-fits-all approach. Orbán reminded the Parliament that true European unity means respecting diversity among nations and not imposing a centralized agenda that undermines the sovereignty of individual member states.

Orbán concluded by affirming his readiness to defend Hungary against these baseless attacks, stating that Hungary’s commitment to its people and its values would remain steadfast, regardless of the EU’s attempts to dictate policy from above. He urged the European Union to focus on more pressing issues, such as addressing migration—which continues to threaten Europe’s stability—and boosting economic competitiveness, areas where Hungary has led by example.
