Jotam Confino, the Foreign Editor at Jewish NewsUK, has reported dangerous encounters faced by two Israeli journalists during their visit to Islamic-controlled Malmö, Sweden, in the lead-up to Eurovision. In Malmö, Sweden’s third-largest city, native Swedes are a minority. According to Confino, journalists Ohad Hemo and Elad Simchayoff visited a market in the Swedish town where they confronted Arab-speaking workers about the war between Israel and Hamas and were subjected to extreme anti-Jewish hatred and threats of violence.
Confino highlighted statements made during their interactions, such as “Pigs are better than Jews, the October 7 massacre is propaganda, and Israel must be destroyed.” These remarks were made as the journalists attended a pro-Palestine/Hamas demonstration, where they were also threatened and spat upon.
Furthermore, Confino noted that security guards at a mosque issued grave warnings about a potential attack on the Malmö Arena during Eurovision, indicating that ISIS might target the event. He reflected on the broader context of antisemitism and hostility, suggesting that a similar report could likely have taken place in Copenhagen, given the recent history of Jewish hatred, harassment, and denial of the events of October 7.
