On May 28, 2024, a Polish soldier named Mateusz was fatally stabbed by a migrant while patrolling the Poland-Belarus border. The attacker used a knife attached to a long stick to reach through the border barrier and stab Mateusz in the chest. Despite immediate medical intervention and being transported to a hospital in Hajnówka and subsequently to a military hospital in Warsaw, Mateusz succumbed to his injuries on June 6, 2024​.
During the rescue attempts, the situation further escalated as other migrants interfered with the medical intervention. They threw spear-like sticks and other objects through the border fence at the rescuers and soldiers. These aggressive attacks complicated the efforts to save Mateusz and are part of a pattern of violence observed at the border​​.
The Polish government has responded by summoning the Belarusian charge d’affaires, demanding the identification and extradition of the perpetrator. Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Kosiniak-Kamysz condemned the attack and emphasized the need for enhanced border security measures. The Polish authorities accuse Belarus and Russia of using migrants as tools to destabilize Poland and the broader European Union, citing the high number of migrants with Russian visas attempting to cross the border​.
Following the attack, the Polish government announced plans to further fortify the border and increase security. This includes the implementation of the “Shield East” program, which aims to enhance geopolitical security, European air defense, internal security, and border security​.
