In a move that has sent shockwaves through Belgium’s political landscape, former Flemish Parliamentarian Dries Van Langenhove has been handed a contentious one-year prison sentence and a fine of $17,470 by the Ghent Criminal Court. The sentencing, widely viewed as a politically motivated maneuver, has reignited accusations of a systematic witchhunt orchestrated by the left-leaning establishment against conservative voices. Van Langenhove’s attorney said he would appeal the judgment, which automatically temporarily suspends his imprisonment. Additionally, he is banned from holding political office for ten years.
Van Langenhove, the founder and leader of the Flemish nationalist youth organization Schild & Vrienden, has long been a thorn in the side of the ruling elite. His advocacy for Flemish independence and outspoken criticism of what he views as the erosion of traditional values have made him a prime target for those seeking to suppress dissenting viewpoints.
The case against Van Langenhove revolves around his alleged participation in a private group chat accused of propagating “hate speech” and purported Nazi sympathies. Despite assertions from his legal team that many messages were intended as harmless banter, the court controversially labeled them as expressions of “Nazi ideology” and “white supremacy.” Notably, Van Langenhove has never discussed Jews or the Holocaust. He maintains that his conviction stems from others’ posts, which the judge deemed “hate speech,” arguing he should have done more to prevent such content from being shared.
Critics have lambasted the decision as a blatant assault on free speech and a flagrant abuse of judicial power by the left-wing government. The decision to equate private conversations with public incitement has sent outraged and sent fear through Belgium’s conservative circles, with many viewing it as a thinly veiled attempt to stifle dissent and silence political opposition.
Tom Van Grieken, chairman of Van Langenhove’s former political party, Vlaams Belang, minced no words in condemning the verdict, decrying it as a politically motivated attack on the conservative movement. Van Grieken’s sentiments echo those of many who see the ruling as emblematic of a broader pattern of persecution against right-leaning individuals by the entrenched powers that be.
Eva Vlaardingerbroek, the former candidate for the Dutch conservative party Forum for Democracy, among others, shared the news in English on X (formerly Twitter). “Former Flemish MP Dries Van Langenhove has just been sentenced to 1 year IN PRISON because supposedly “racist memes” were shared in a private group chat he was part of. This is the absolute state of freedom of speech in Europe. They’re jailing patriotic dissidents. Next time they’ll do this to me, you or anyone who goes against the globalist regime. I’m seriously lost for words here. This is full blown tyranny and we should fight it with all our might.
Her tweet was noticed by X owner Elon Musk. He initially reacted very briefly with the word “Whoa” to the news.

Van Langenhove himself decided to provide Musk with more explanation and shared an example of the memes included in the file. “The ‘shocking memes’ that others shared in a private group conversation got me jailed,” he wrote. “Someone else sent this meme in a group chat, and you got jail time?” Musk responded. “Yes,” Van Langenhove answered. “Although the judge (and the media) admitted that I never sent any of these memes, he stated that I should have done more to stop others from sending them and labeled the memes as ‘hate speech,’ which is a criminal offense in Belgium.”
Van Langenhove then goes on to give Musk even more context and makes an attempt to regain his organization’s X account in one move. “I founded Schild & Friends, the largest and most influential political youth movement in Belgium, in 2017. Some time later, it was banned from Twitter for no reason. We had (allegedly) a FB group with 900 activists and a Discord chat with many hundreds of users. In one of the groups, someone said ‘post your edgiest meme.’ The edgy memes mentioned above were posted in this thread—a thread I didn’t participate in. Now, 7 years later, I am the most important nationalist activist in Belgium and the Netherlands, and I am associated with the party that will win the next elections in Belgium. The regime wants to silence us, so they are using memes posted by others 7 years ago to put me in jail.”
Several other high-profile Americans drew attention to the shocking political witch hunt taking place in Van Landenhove’s case. Journalist Steven Crowder and podcaster Joe Rogan.
Following there high-profile individuals such as Musk, Rogan, Cowder, and Vlaardingerbroek speaking out in defense of Dries Van Langenhove, they themselves became targets of left-wing media backlash in Belgium. This escalation underscores a concerning trend of media weaponization to suppress dissenting voices and maintain control over the narrative.
The aftermath of Van Langenhove’s sentencing is expected to have widespread implications, reaching beyond Belgium’s borders. It serves as a stark reminder of the precarious state of free expression in Europe and the lengths to which leftists in power will go to silence dissenting voices.
As Van Langenhove prepares for his appeal, he does so not only as a symbol of resistance against state-sponsored suppression but also as a rallying point for those who refuse to be cowed by the tyranny of political correctness. In the face of adversity, his supporters remain steadfast in their commitment to defending the principles of liberty and democracy.”
Clownshow politics and tyranny.
Hatespeech is anything the degenerate lefties subjectively find offensive. No free speech for anyone but them. Then they cry and say you are a threat to democracy —horsesh*t. God forbid you tell them women do not have a penis.
Too bad we don’t have an image upload and edit button in this akismet GUI, or we could put up some memes ourselves. I could edit my typos too.😁👍
