On March 13, 2024, in Aubervilliers, France, 18-year-old Wanys R., with an Algerian background, collided with the La Courneuve anti-crime brigade while evading a police check, tragically resulting in his death. Tonight, violent riots have erupted in France. As investigations into Wanys’s death continue, many fear a disturbing echo of the destructive riots that gripped the nation last year following the death of Nahël Merzouk, who, like Wanys, was also attempting to evade authorities.

The Incident

On the evening of Wednesday, March 13, 2024, in Aubervilliers, Seine-Saint-Denis, France, a fatal incident occurred involving an 18-year-old scooter rider, identified as Wanys R., and the anti-crime brigade (BAC) of La Courneuve. The collision, which ensued after Wanys and his passenger refused to comply with a police check, fled the scene, and committed multiple traffic violations, resulted in the death of the young man, whose family is from Algeria.

Investigations and Controversy

According to reports, the BAC vehicle, responding as reinforcement to the fleeing scooter, attempted to avoid a taxi that had failed to yield, leading to the tragic collision with Wanys’s scooter, which was coming from the opposite direction. The impact caused Wanys to suffer a cardiac arrest at the scene; although he was initially resuscitated, he later succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased at the hospital around 11 p.m. His passenger sustained serious injuries but survived the incident.

The Bobigny public prosecutor’s office announced the initiation of two separate investigations: one targeting the police officers involved in the collision for “homicide and involuntary injuries,” conducted by the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN), and another concerning the “aggravated refusal to comply” related to the actions of Wanys and his passenger.

Wanys’s Background

Wanys’s background has become a focal point in the collision’s aftermath. Prior to this incident, he had been convicted three times as a minor for various offenses, including “extortion with violence and acts of intimidation.” At the beginning of 2023, he received a mixed sentence, including jail time and a suspended sentence, and completed the last part of his sentence under electronic surveillance until July 2023. Despite his legal troubles, those close to Wanys described a young man attempting to turn his life around, actively engaged with an educator, and not having drawn attention to himself since his last conviction.

The event has sparked considerable controversy, particularly regarding the circumstances leading up to the collision. Video evidence that surfaced shortly after the incident has been a point of contention. Wanys’s family, through their lawyer, Yassine Bouzrou, contests the initial explanation provided by authorities, asserting that the police vehicle intentionally swerved into the scooter. They have announced plans to file a complaint against the police “on the charge of intentional violence resulting in death without the intention of causing it and aggravated willful violence.” Meanwhile, the family has expressed their desire to have their son buried in Algeria, the family’s ancestral homeland.

Community Response

The community’s response to Wanys’s death, which is predominantly comprised of migrants, has been one of violence, threats, and attacks on police. Tonight, La Courneuve police station and several public buildings are under siege, targeted with fireworks and Molotov cocktails. At least two police officers have been injured, and at least five people have been arrested. Groups of young radicals have been rallying through social networks, seeking to exact revenge for the incident. According to a witness on the scene, the migrant youth and left-wing radicals of La Courneuve are resolute in avenging the death of Wanys, hoping to incite a movement akin to the aftermath of Nahël Merzouk’s death.

Merzouk, who was killed by police on June 27, 2023, became a catalyst for a wave of rioting across France after a police chase in Nanterre, near Paris, for traffic violations and refusing to stop. The situation escalated when, after being cornered due to traffic congestion, Merzouk attempted to flee, leading to a fatal shooting by the police. Witnesses and reports suggest compliance with police orders could have averted the tragedy.

The scenes from that period, with Molotov cocktails, fireworks, burning dumpsters, cars, and buildings, looted stores and attacked police stations, are still vivid in the public memory. Schools and cultural centers were targeted, some ransacked and destroyed, and even the country’s second-largest prison, Fresnes Prison, was not spared. The statistics are stark: 1,105 buildings were set on fire, 808 police officers were injured, and a wave of lawlessness swept across the nation.

This backdrop of violence has reignited fears in the wake of the latest incident. The pervasive images of chaos and destruction serve as a terrifying reminder of the potential for escalation. Furthermore, the situation is compounded by the general disrespect for authority among migrant youth. This topic stokes heated debate regarding immigration, integration, societal cohesion, and the threats law enforcement faces due to mass migration.
