The resounding and unexpected victory of the Dutch Party for Freedom (PVV) in last Wednesday’s elections has focused attention on its leader and founder, Geert Wilders. Everyone has examined the programs he could implement if he formed a coalition within the Parliament of The Hague. In addition to stopping mass immigration, mainly Muslims (220,000 entries in the Netherlands in 2022, ten times more than in 2002), organizing a referendum on the left-wing European Union exit, and ending all aid to Ukraine, the election winner announced in his manifesto that he would ban mosques, Muslim schools, and the distribution of the Quran.

This position towards Islam has been the foundation of his ideology since 2004 when he founded his political party. Marked by the assassination of filmmaker Theo van Gogh, a critic of Islam, by a Muslim in the same year, he believes that this radical and dangerous ideology has no place in the Netherlands. In a text signed by him and published by an Amsterdam newspaper in 2007, he refers to the Quran as a “fascist book” and calls for its distribution to be outlawed. This is a position he still holds today. If Geert Wilders is nicknamed the “Dutch Trump,” it is not only because of the spectacular blond hairstyle the two men have in common.
Donald Trump, too, aimed to halt mass illegal immigration and treat certain dangerous Islamic countries differently. During his term in 2017, he decreed a “ban” on certain migrants from Sharia-adherent countries: Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. Iraq was eventually removed from the list after Baghdad committed to scrutinizing visa applications from its nationals more closely. At the time, a candidate in the Republican primaries and a leading contender for the presidential nomination, Donald Trump, stated that he would reinstate the so-called “Muslim ban” if re-elected to the White House and would extend it to other dangerous Islamic countries.

In Europe, a head of government has emerged as a critic of Islam: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. Re-elected last September after resigning five years earlier, the leader of the Slovak Social Democratic Party has always believed that “Islam has no place in Slovakia.” During his previous term, he had a law passed that prohibited the recognition of Islam by the state. The new Slovak President vetoed this law. Back in power, Robert Fico is ready to resume his anti-Sharia offensive and fight to prevent this dangerous threat from spreading. Slovakia is the only European Union state without a mosque. In the capital, Bratislava, only the Cordoba Cultural Center has a prayer room available on Fridays. 6,000 Muslims are living in Slovakia.

Elsewhere, measures aimed at constraining Islamization mainly focus on women’s clothing. Sharia wear, such as burqas and sometimes the hijab, are targeted. The wearing of the burqa is prohibited in Austria, France, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Netherlands (in public schools, hospitals, and transportation), Germany (in certain states), Italy (in certain cities), Spain (in several Catalan municipalities), Luxembourg, Switzerland, Norway (in public schools and universities), Kosovo (in public schools), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (in courts and other judicial institutions).
In Denmark, the niqab and burqa have been banned since 2018. In Germany, of the 16 states, 8 prohibit female teachers from wearing the hijab in the classroom: Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Saarland, Bremen, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Berlin. Note that the conservative party AFD demands the prohibition of sharia-adherent clothing like the burqa and niqab in public places.
