In true Neo-Marxist fashion, Berlin police have decided that rather than address the issues of violence and other types of crime within that region; they would instead change the words used to address the people committing them. For centuries, authoritarian regimes and their leaders also captured language to control thought.
The New Year’s resolution of Berlin’s state officials is to implement a more careful choice of vocabulary for the state police. In a recommendation for “discrimination-sensitive language use” by The State Criminal Police Office, police are told which terms are “appropriate” to use.
► Thus, the police must say “West Asian” instead of “from southern countries.” The reason the police have been given for the change is “The term would be geographically imprecise and “negatively connoted by the media.”
The head of the German police union, Rainer Wendt (66), fears a “concealment of reality.”
“In Berlin, young men from Turkey, Iraq, or Lebanon are often involved in criminal offenses.” If these people are referred to as “West Asians,” this blurs the reality of life, explains the head of the Police Union.

► The term “refugee” is also “controversial.” It would be “preferable” for the police to speak of “persons seeking protection.”
► The Berlin officials are also advised against using the term asylum seekers. Instead, they should use the gendered form “asylum seekers.”
[In German, the original term is masculine, so they advocate a gender-neutral phrase, both of which translate to the English, “Asylum seekers.”]
Wendt finds this irritating. Given the problems facing the Berlin police – clan crime, Islamic radicals, climate gluers, [Those who glue themselves to things in climate protests], etc. – such recommendations “acted like a mockery of the workforce.”
Wendt believes “the best language school is no help against the dark side of migration policy.”
German parliament member Christoph de Vries (48, CDU) is also outraged by the language changes stating, “The Berlin police officers deserve trust and political backing instead of a left-green language code.” And: “It doesn’t get any better if you don’t call things by their names.”
Alexander Throm (54, CDU), the Union’s domestic affairs spokesman, is also outraged at the new proposed words, “Misunderstood consideration of red-red-green is out of place in a description of the perpetrator.” A description must be objectively correct and understandable for everyone. “This also includes all the external characteristics of a perpetrator,” says Throm.
