Chinese badminton prodigy Zhang Zhijie, 17, tragically passed away after suffering a heart attack during a match in Indonesia. Zhang, who recently won a prestigious youth tournament in Haarlem, suddenly collapsed on the court.
He was swiftly transported to the hospital by ambulance but, unfortunately, did not survive.
The Chinese Badminton Association expressed their profound sorrow, as did Indian Olympic medalist Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, who shared on social media that the world had lost a great talent.
Zhang fell to the ground during a match against Japan’s Kazuma Kawano. Disturbing footage shows him convulsing, attempting to stand, and then lying still.
