An 18-year-old Italian girl, Pamela Mastropietro, was raped, murdered, and dismembered in January 2018 by a Nigerian migrant drug dealer Innocent Oseghale. The 32-year-old Nigerian appealed part of his 2019 sentence, arguing that he did not sexually assault Pamela before killing her. However, the court confirmed the maximum sentence, and he will spend the rest of his life in prison for the young girl’s murder and sexual assault.
Oseghale arrived in Italy in 2014 as an asylum-seeker but had dropped out of his refugee program in 2017, a year before he murdered Mastropietro.
The Nigerian drugged Pamela before he detained, raped, and stabbed her. He mutilated and dismembered the young woman’s body which he stuffed inside a suitcase and threw into a ditch. Police later found Pamela’s bloodied clothing at Oseghale’s home.
The illegal Nigerian claimed in his testimony that Pamela died from a drug overdose. However, an autopsy showed that Mastropietro died due to successive abdominal stabbings. It also found that she was dismembered while she was still alive.
The reading of the court’s decision was greeted with applause and cheers from the spectators in the courtroom. “A monster is in jail, for sure. Now I expect them to arrest the others, too. My family and I will be fighting for it. Pamela deserves this round of applause instead—a round of applause for her,” declared her elated mother.
“Life sentence! Thank God, I am so happy! I am so happy! After five years, we didn’t expect a second trial on the ascertainment of rape. But now that the rape has been confirmed, It’s a victory.”
Italy’s Prime Minister Meloni also celebrated the court’s decision and showed her support for Pamela’s family:
In an interview at the courthouse, Pamela’s mother, Alessandra Verni, was asked by a journalist whether she believes that the images she brought into the court somehow played a role in this second trial. The journalist was referring to a t-shirt Alessandra wore in January 2023, with images of her daughter’s decapitated and dismembered body, as a protest to a hearing where Oseghale was contesting some additional charges related to the murder.
“I don’t know,” the mother stated. “What I did last time was due to my exasperation because, as I have said, it was not tolerable that after five years, they were still discussing whether she was raped or not. Not to mention all the things that haven’t been done in the last five years and so many things that still need to be done. So, since I was an exasperated parent, I showed the pictures at that time. I don’t know whether it helped, yet I did it.”
In June 2020, Pamela’s uncle and lawyer, Marco Verni, took a knee in her memory during court proceedings during the George Floyd protests. While he sympathized with Floyd’s cause, he disagreed with some murder victims having more public and political support than others. A year earlier, he published a photograph of Pamela’s decapitated head, justifying his decision by pointing to pro-migrant activists who share pictures of drowned migrants.
Although Pamela’s family is celebrating the court’s verdict, they still seek justice for her. Alessandra reminded the journalist that other people were still involved in her daughter’s murder which has yet to be found. Furthermore, she explains their fight is far from finished:
There’s a monster in jail, for sure. Now I expect them to arrest the others, too. And my family and I will be fighting for it. There are other monsters out there on the loose. So I hope they will continue the investigation. Because I say it once again, there is evidence: the wiretap proves there were other people in that house on January 30, 2018.

Does Italy not have a death penalty? Death is the only logical and appropriate sentence for a monster. I would suggest dismemberment following his execution and returning his remains to his home country, that he should never have been allowed to leave.
