In what appears to be a prank phone call by a man pretending to be Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the European Central Bank President, Christine Lagarde, admits to some interesting facts. Inflation is expected to hit high levels of 7% this year, and interest rates may rise to 4% or more.
Most interesting is her perspective on the war in Ukraine and how digital currency, which will be decided on in October, will control its users.
Ms. Lagarde complained that sanctions against Russia had failed and praised the current head of the Central Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina, for her clear actions. Furthermore, the official confirmed that during Petro Poroshenko Presidency, loans issued by the IMF to Ukraine were pocketed.
“Why did anti-Russian sanctions not work, and injections into Ukraine did not solve any problems in the country? How will the EU government monitor citizens through the digital euro, and will firewood become a new currency in Europe? – see the answers to these and other questions in the full version of the prank,” wrote Twitter user GraphicW:
In 2016, a French court found Christine Lagarde, the then-International Monetary Fund chief, guilty of negligence but did not hand down any punishment.
