In a move that further exacerbates the already strained relationship between Hungary and Ukraine, Hungary has announced its decision to block future arms deliveries from the European Union (EU) to Ukraine. The decision comes in response to increasingly hostile actions from Ukraine, with the latest revelation fueling the fire.
Recently leaked intelligence documents obtained by The Washington Post shed light on a controversial proposal made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to the leaked documents, Zelenskyy suggested blowing up a crucial Russian pipeline that passes through Ukraine and supplies Hungary with oil. This pipeline plays a vital role in Hungary’s industrial sector, making it a significant point of concern for the Hungarian government.
The leaked documents indicate that during a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Svyrydenko, Zelenskyy emphasized the need to destroy the pipeline to undermine the industry of Hungary’s supposed “pro-Russia” Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán. The Hungarian government has expressed deep outrage and condemnation over Zelenskyy’s proposition, considering it a direct attack on Hungary’s sovereignty and the security of its energy supply.
Adding to Hungary’s grievances, Ukraine has recently blacklisted the Hungarian bank OTP, accusing it of sponsoring Russia’s invasion. This move has further strained relations between the two countries, leading Hungary to take decisive action by blocking arms and ammunition deliveries from the EU to Ukraine.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto addressed the situation in a press conference, emphasizing the significance of the oil pipeline for Hungary’s energy supply. He stated, “If no more oil were to come to Hungary through this pipeline, then Hungary’s oil supply would simply not be physically possible. Not to mention all the other countries also completely dependent on management for their oil supplies.” Furthermore, Minister Szijjarto regarded the threat to Hungary’s energy supply as an attack on its sovereignty, prompting Hungary to take measures to protect its national interests.
The leaked documents also reveal a more assertive side of President Zelenskyy, contradicting his public image as a calm and stoic statesman facing Russia’s aggression. In private communications with top aides and military leaders, Zelenskyy proposed occupying Russian villages to gain leverage over Moscow, expressed a desire to bomb the Russian oil pipeline supplying Hungary, and even mused about acquiring long-range missiles to strike targets within Russia’s borders.
The implications of these revelations are significant, as they indicate a stark contrast between Zelenskyy’s public-facing stance of prioritizing the targeting of Russian forces inside Ukraine and his private discussions advocating bolder military actions. Whether the United States has shared this sensitive information with its allies remains unclear. Still, Western governments continue to support Zelenskyy, providing Ukraine with advanced weaponry despite concerns about further escalation.
