Rather than advocating for the immediate deportation of these individuals, globalist-tied Meloni and Von der Leyen insisted that other European countries, already struggling with their own migrant populations, provide refuge to those who had crossed the Mediterranean and invaded Italy’s shores.

The influx has occurred despite an EU-inked accord with Tunisia to stem the smuggling operations in exchange for economic assistance. Meloni called for the accord to be concretized and the promised EU funds transferred to Tunis.

Lampedusa’s Struggles and the Ongoing Crisis

Lampedusa, a small Italian island just 150 kilometers off the Tunisian coast, has been under immense pressure in recent days as over 10,000 migrants arrived on its shores in just three days. The migrant reception center on the island, the front line of Italy’s migration crisis, is now on the brink of “collapse” due to the rapidly rising numbers of arrivals. During their visit, Meloni and Von der Leyen witnessed the dire conditions at an overcrowded reception center and at the island’s port, where makeshift boats packed with migrants were docked.

The arrivals have put pressure on Meloni, who came into power as head of a conservative government last year promising to crack down on migration. With a European Parliament election next year, Meloni’s conservative coalition partner, the League Party, has increased criticism of the EU-Tunisia deal, saying the increasing numbers of migrants showed it clearly had failed.

Meloni also voiced her “concerns” about the lack of solidarity from Italy’s European partners. Italy has welcomed nearly 130,000 migrants on its territory since the beginning of the year. Meloni called on fellow European nations to take their “fair share” of illegal migrants and shoulder the burden.

This represents a dramatic shift in Giorgia Meloni’s immigration policy, departing from her previous hardline nationalist stance. Formerly pledging to terminate illegal immigration and secure Italy’s borders, Meloni has now embraced a globalist approach, welcoming tens of thousands of illegal migrants and collaborating with the European Union to pressure other nations to accept undocumented individuals. Ursula Von der Leyen echoed Meloni’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for a “European response” to illegal immigration. She urged EU member states to provide sanctuary to the migrants who had arrived in Italy. Von der Leyen also proposed a comprehensive plan to tackle the crisis, including expanding the efforts of Frontex to combat human smugglers, accelerating financial assistance to Tunisia (a primary departure point for migrants), and reinforcing legal pathways for immigration. Once again Von der Leyen’s solution to illegal immigration is to make it legal.

In addition to these developments, French Minister Gérald Darmanin is scheduled to visit Italy in the coming days. This visit follows discussions between Giorgia Meloni and left-wing President Emmanuel Macron, with both leaders committing to strengthening cooperation at the European level to find immediate and long-term solutions to the ongoing migration crisis.

Marine Le Pen, a former French presidential candidate and leader of the National Rally, commented on Darmanin’s upcoming visit, stating that he would “witness the damage caused by his policies.” These developments underscore the urgency of addressing the complex and pressing issue of illegal migration in the European context.

Swedish European Union (EU) Commissioner Ylva Johansson and the political elite have gone to great lengths to conceal the consequences of their immigration policies on Europe. This includes arresting migration critics, misrepresenting and suppressing links between migration and crime and terrorism, and labeling those concerned about the economic effects of mass migration as right-wing extremists or racist.

Johansson continues to compel EU member states to accept all migrant applications despite overwhelmed and financially strained systems. She insists that rejections are illegal and that everyone has the right to be treated in line with European values. According to Johansson, migration is essential for the prosperity of the continent, and new legal pathways are needed, not just for skilled workers but for medium and low-skilled workers as well.

Last year, on the 5th anniversary of the Islamic terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 130 people, European Interior Ministers held a virtual meeting on the fight against terrorism. During this meeting, Ylva Johansson announced her intention to crack down further on anyone who sees Islam as a threat. She firmly stated, “Religion is not a threat,” and emphasized the need for the EU to wage an intense fight against “right-wing extremism.”

Johansson has consistently argued that neither Islam nor migration poses a threat to Europe; instead, she identifies right-wing extremism as the actual problem. She firmly believes that closing a country’s borders is not an effective way to address security or pandemic threats. Instead, she advocates for enhancing digital security within the EU.

The commissioner also criticized the idea of training imams in accordance with European values, asserting that she does not believe such training falls within the competencies of the EU.

Cultural and Demographic Concerns

These policy positions have caused outrage among EU member states and have intensified the debate surrounding immigration and its consequences. In September 2020, Commissioner Johansson’s opening statement at the LIBE debate on the new Pact on Asylum and Migration drew considerable backlash.

In her statement, Johansson argued that migration is integral to Europe’s prosperity and emphasized the need for legal pathways, not only for skilled workers but also for medium and low-skilled workers. She warned citizens in EU member states against pushing back against migration, stating that they “need” the 3 million migrants who received residency permits the previous year. She further stressed that Europeans are responsible for taking care of “refugees” and not to protest against illegal migration.

According to a UN report titled ‘Replacement Migration: Is It a Solution to Decline and Aging Populations,’ some of the lowest total fertility rates in Europe in 2021 were recorded in Italy, with a rate as low as 1.25. By 2050, the report predicts that a third of Italy’s population will be made up of foreigners. Italian think tank Fondazione Fare Futuro further predicts that driven by mass migration and varying birthrates among Christians and Muslims, half of Italy’s population could be Muslim by the end of the century. In just ten years, the number of migrants in Italy has surged by 419%. These trends raise concerns about the potential erosion of local and national cultures through dilution.
