On a cold Saturday afternoon in February, over 10.000 thousand Spaniards in Murcia came out to support the Vox Party and their leader, Santiago Abascal. The crowd waived the Spanish flag, cheered, and shouted, “President, President, President!.” The rally was held in a bullring to kick off the May 28 regional and municipal elections race.
Due to its special significance for the party, Murcia was chosen to officially present Vox’s candidates. Moreover, it was the region in which it obtained the most votes in the 2019 general elections. “Murcia always responds. It has always shown us that it is ahead of Vox in Spain”, the President of the formation stressed at the beginning of his speech.
Abascal focused the first part of his speech on criticizing Spain’s socialist government, which socialist Pedro Sánchez heads. He called it “the worst government in Spain in the last eighty years” and “one of the worst in our entire history as a nation.” The leader of Vox also called it “illegitimate” and believed it “has to be expelled immediately.”
Abascal accused him of “suffocating” the Spanish people with abusive taxes, generating a “debt that ruins generations and generations,” prohibiting the Spanish from exploiting resources with climate laws, “handing over” the direction of the country to “all the enemies of the unity of our homeland,” “reducing the sentences of rapists and pedophiles” and “having attacked freedoms with totalitarian laws,” among them the Democratic Memory. “This government is guilty of leaving us without political, economic, and energy sovereignty,” said Abascal, who has also accused the government of “having degraded democratic institutions” and having “assaulted justice.”
Abascal also harshly criticized the media profession for the “demonization” of his party. However, he explains that their “insults of Vox are medals we put on our chests.” “More and more media target us and try to sink us. So many want to destroy Vox: some because they hate us and others because they can’t control us.” Abascal’s party did not accredit two left-wing media outlets, El Español, and elDiario.es, to cover its rally.

Criminalizing men and destroying women’s safety
The leader slammed the government “for destroying the equality among Spanish people.” Furthermore, the Vox leader said, “not only equality at the national level but also the equality between women and men.” The state has created unfair laws that are not working to stop the plague, known as violence against women, but instead criminalizes men for the mere fact of being men.
“They have destroyed women’s safety, too, since women are not safe anymore, not even in prisons, now that a man who used to be a rapist can say that he identifies as a woman,” explained Abascal. “And now that women find it hard to compete in sports since they are supposed to compete with a gentleman who says he is now a woman.”
“This government is to blame for leaving us without political, economic, and energy sovereignty. For instance, who is in charge of this government? Those millionaires Pedro Sanchez [Spain’s socialist President] is now giving money to are. The people he hangs out with and listens to in the Davos Forum. Those men who want to pass over borders, nations, and democracies, so that very few people decide anywhere in the world, far and wide, what should be decided by each of us instead, within the sovereignty of each nation.”
