A World Cup official in the host country of Qatar drew criticism after saying that homosexuality is “damage in the mind” and that gay visitors to his country must “accept” the rules in the Muslim country.
“They have to accept our rules here,” Qatari World Cup Ambassador Khalid Salman said during an interview with German television broadcaster ZDF this week.
“(Homosexuality) is haram. You know what haram (forbidden) means?,” Salman continued. When asked why it was haram, Salman said: “I am not a strict Muslim, but why is it haram? Because it is damage in the mind.”
“During the World Cup, many things will come here to the country. Let’s talk about gays,” Salman added in the interview. “The most important thing is, everybody will accept that they come here. But they will have to accept our rules.”
Homosexuality has been criminalized by the country’s Islamic government, and article 258 of Qatar’s legal code imposes a prison term of seven years for gay relations involving copulation. Individuals can be jailed for “leading, instigating or seducing a male in any way to commit sodomy.”

Just last month, Human Rights Watch published a new report documenting Qatari arrests and abuses of gay people. Nasser Mohamed, a Qatari-born physician now living in San Francisco, recently sounded the alarm in an essay for Outsports about the dismal state of LGBTQ rights in his home country.
“Some of my friends have told me stories about online chat rooms and how undercover cops are arresting men trying to meet other men in a romantic setting,” he writes. “I also heard about lashing and prison sentences.”
European captains plan to wear “One Love” armbands at the tournament to support LGBTQ inclusion and diversity, though FIFA would probably prefer they didn’t. FIFA president Gianni Infantino sent a letter last week to all 32 World Cup clubs urging players to stay quiet about social and political issues.

Qatar is the first Middle Eastern country to host the World Cup, but the small nation has come under intense pressure in recent years for its treatment of foreign workers and restrictive social laws.

The victim, from the Philippines, was working as an office assistant in the World Cup host country when he says he was confronted by six men.

Why haven’t Western left-wing leaders raised the question of gay rights under Islam? U.S. Democrats and their celebrity activists have never once promoted a boycott of the Islamic regimes that stone, execute and jail their homosexual citizens.
Muslim political leaders in America and throughout the West often form alliances with left-wing politicians and organizations, which sometimes include peripheral support for gay rights. This alliance appears to be more out of expediency and self-interest rather than genuine concern. There has never been any noticeable effort on the part of Muslim leaders in the West to relieve the plight of homosexuals in Islamic countries overseas – where their influence would surely carry more weight than that of their secular allies.

I do not feel the ambassador said anything wrong. Homosexuality is a lie, and I also believe a mental issue, no matter which or how many countries pretend that it isn’t. For sure it is unnatural. If the homosexual lie was true, natural, as it’s supporters like to say, then why is it we do not see homosexuality in other species? I’ll tell you why; homosexuality is a lie and not normal in humans or animals. It is also an abomination in the eyes of God.
