At some point during the 1960’s, Democrat Rep. John McMillan allegedly sent a “truckload of watermelons” to black D.C. Mayor Walter Washington after he submitted his budget. Fifty years later, the radical left-wing group Indivisible claims that the incident proves that racism exists in Washington, D.C.
Using the story to push for D.C. Statehood, Indivisible forgot to mention that the perpetrator of the alleged racist act was a democrat.
From an Indivisible mass email:
…as recently as the 1960s, the conservative chairman of the House committee in charge of D.C. oversight sent a truckload of watermelons to the city’s Black mayor.
Indivisible did not name the evil racist, but identified him as a “conservative.” The below screenshot reveals that Indivisible has repeatedly cited the story to prove black Americans are victims of racism in Washington, D.C., but altered one key word:
Take a look at the text side by side:
The source for this claim appears to be a 1994 book by left-wing journalists Harry S. Jaffe and Tom Sherwood titled “Dream City: Race, Power, and the Decline of Washington, D.C.” The alleged racist act was given one sentence on page 62:
There are no footnotes or endnotes, but there is section called “Source Notes” that states that “Congress’s treatment of the District under Senator Thomas Bilbo and Representative John McMillan came from committee reports.”
Both of the authors are active on Twitter and have not yet responded to requests for the source of the “truckload of watermelons” story.
This author will update the article if/when they respond.
D.C. Statehood Would Need Constitutional Amendment
Indivisible is seeking to convince followers to support their petition for D.C. statehood, an effort designed to get two more Democrats in the Senate.
In fact, in order to obtain D.C. statehood, there must be an amendment to the Constitution.
Congress knows the DC Statehood bill actually requires a constitutional amendment. That’s why the bill contains an entire section which expedites the ratification of an amendment to cancel the 23rd amendment…

The proposed unconstitutional legislation offers “[E]xpedited procedures for consideration of constitutional amendment repealing 23rd Amendment” in Section 224 (Page 54):
In order to achieve their nefarious goal, those pushing for D.C. Statehood have to change the Constitution and convince their followers that the real reason D.C. is not a state is because, of course, racism. Not once is the Constitution mentioned in Indivisible’s propaganda.
