Dutch Party Demands Terrorist Designation for Antifa After it Claimed Responsibility for Attack on Their Leader Thierry Baudet (Video)

In the aftermath of Antifa claiming responsibility for the assault on Dutch FVD leader Thierry Baudet during a campaign event, the party is calling for urgent action, demanding the immediate inclusion of the radical left-wing organization on the terrorist list.

Thierry Baudet, addressing the incident, referred to the AIVD (General Intelligence and Security Service), which identifies ‘anti-institutional extremism’ as the foremost threat to democracy. This assessment stands in stark contrast to the characterization of left-wing activism as a trivial occurrence. Notably, the AIVD refrains from investigating left-wing activism, asserting that it does not pursue goals or employ methods contrary to democratic principles.

On its website, FVD explicitly categorizes Antifa as a terrorist organization. When questioned about a premeditated plan to attack Baudet, an Antifa spokesperson declined to respond, asserting that the organization is ‘not always’ opposed to the use of violence. The group justifies its violent attacks by contending, “Baudet’s words lead to violence,” indicating an effort to stifle the politician.

Portraying Antifa as a criminal terror organization, Baudet emphasized the imperative of designating it as such to employ more effective investigative tools and prevent future political violence. He stated, “It is an organization that disregards the democratic constitutional state, does not shy away from violence, and actively engages in political terror to suppress ideas and intimidate individuals. This cannot be tolerated.”

The call for Antifa’s classification as a criminal organization aligns with FVD’s commitment to restoring democracy and ensuring the safety of political figures. The party is poised to develop a proposal, seeking collective support from other political parties post-elections, underlining the necessity for a unified stance against political violence and terrorism.

The violent incident follows a pattern of attacks on Baudet, with the most recent assault on the campaign trail being the second in less than a month.

Antifa has claimed responsibility for the attack on Baudet, stating that the assailant acted out of conviction. The group’s presence at the scene and expressions like “Pim Fortuyn is dead” on their attire further proved further links and concern. On 6 May 2002, at age 54, the Dutch politician was assassinated by gunshot in Hilversum, North Holland, by left-wing radical, Volkert van der Graaf. The attack took place in a car park outside a radio studio where Fortuyn had just given an interview. This was nine days before the general election, for which he was running.

The repeated targeting of Baudet and other conservative politicians and parties underscores the urgency for addressing the threat posed by Antifa and similar left-wing groups.
